The Moment For Truth

The Moment For Truth
Recently, there have been a series of commercials that have caught my attention. The commercials are what I term “Shock value” commercials. These commercials are for the TV show entitled “The Moment of Truth.” This show seems to take up the baton from daytime talk shows in placing contestants on stage while hooked up to a lie detector machine. The show then asks random questions of increasing levels of stress. Here is what the Show Infe page says about the show on Fox’s website:

THE MOMENT OF TRUTH will put participants to the test -- the lie detector
test -- to reveal whether or not they are telling the truth for a chance to win
half a million dollars.
On THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, the challenge is simple --
answer 21 increasingly personal questions honestly, as determined by a
polygraph, and win up to $500,000. This is the only game show where participants
know both the questions and the answers before they begin to play. Prior to
playing, participants are strapped to a lie detector and asked a series of
questions by a polygraph expert, who records their answers. At any time, between
the polygraph and the televised game, participants can change their answers or
walk away from the competition.
To win $500,000 participants have to tell
the truth. Of course, the questions are easier when the stakes are low – but as
the prize amount increases, they will be challenged to fess up to matters they
might normally lie about. The touchier questions could be especially revealing
because participants reveal their answers in front of spouses, relatives and
friends, hanging on every word. What deep dark secret will someone divulge for
hundreds of thousands of dollars?

In the last three weeks, spouses have admitted willingness to end their marriage for a date with their former boyfriend, if they would commit infidelity with a former boyfriend if they knew that they would not get caught, and this week, the ad shows a man answering yes to the question of whether or not he has had an affair with the friend of a spouse.
The questions and the answers, along with the recent infidelity of yet another elected official, leave me wondering if the other spouse is left to ask, “does my spouse still love me?” “why would my spouse make me suffer this way?” and in times where they are left alone following the shows, “where is my spouse?”

This makes me wonder what kind of society we are living in when we would subject ourselves to ridicule for money, and yet car about the emoting of an inanimate object. We leave friends, family members, and even complete strangers emotionally bruised, bloodied and beaten on the side of the road for the sake of promoting ourselves, or winning some money.
I also wonder, how could these peoples lives be so sad, that they would place themselves in these precarious situations?
One of the things that happened this week that brought this to mind was a conversation I had with a friend in ministry. We decided that what leads mankind into to trouble today is the same thing that has always led mankind into trouble. Rebellion!

Mankind still struggles with placing the desires of what we want, with the desires of what God wants. This is super destructive behavior. Paul addresses this in Romans 1: 21-23.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave
thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were
darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the
glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and
animals and reptiles.

The results are also listed by Paul:

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to
sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They
exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things
rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave
them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for
unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with
women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts
with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of
God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They
have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.
They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,
slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of
doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless,
heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do
such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but
also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:28-32)

This tells me plainly, that even if I am not the one responsible for the sinful actions of my fellow man, if I approve (i.e. support by watching etc.) that I am as depraved as they are. Let us stand, not as members of this world, but as those called out of this world for the hope of the glory of Jesus Christ. A beacon in a dark sky, that directs others to real life, not just an existence with a chance for money…
